It doesn't sound stupid at all.
You can program a psi-ball do anything that you are able to do yourself. Psi-balls are you as well, there's no separation.
Sussch is right, they can be programmed to explode. But remember, psiballs are made of subtle energy and aren't physical unless you are skilled with psychokinesis. So a psiball exploding would affect other energy, but not physical stuff.
Well if i can step in at all shelling it will help keep its shape but no you dont "Need" to shell it you can if you like it would help to make you better skilled with energy manipulation
