For those of you who don't know, Synaesthesia is a cross wiring of the senses, where activation of one sensory modality, i.e.number processing, will lead to activity in another, i.e. colour. I decided to enquire about this because I once met a friend of a friend who, as well as claiming psychic abilities/experiences, it also subsequently transpired had this too, it made me wonder if the two are linked in some way.

Supposedly one can train their mind to simulate synaesthesia on command. However most people with synaesthesia have no background in psionics, so i've been told. Personally I don't see any practical application to inducing synaesthesea, It would just be for novelty, or for a control exercise.
I think perhaps you misunderstand. I'm not interested in synaesthesia for its own sake. I am wondering whether if it is assumed that something like telepathy was common place before the invention of language as some literature suggests then, as we have evolved so that during development cross sensory connections are pruned, i.e. all babies start off cross wired but then genes do their work and compartmentalise sensory information, that might suggest that if this compartmentalisation doesn't occur to the same extent in synaesthetes, then oerhaps latent psi ability may occur too on occasion. I know that probably sounds somewhat ridiculous but it was just a thought.
Synesthesia is actually something we all have to one degree or another. If you know what synesthesia is, you've probably already heard of the "Bouba/Kiki" effect first observed by Wolfgang Kohler and then repeated on TV by Vilayanur S. Ramachandran (Bouba/Kiki Effect). It's a basic function of the brain. Some people, however, have it at a higher level such as when they perceive colors or other sensory stimuli uncontrollably. I know I don't have it to that degree but I do know that I get certain sensations whenever I see weird textures, or hear sounds.
For instance, the band called "Shpongle" (amazing guys!). They have weird sounds in their music and sometimes when I "turn on" my synesthesia, I feel certain feelings both emotionally and physically. Other people, however, like a friend at school, would see colors involuntarily and with such clarity (not with their minds eye....I mean like their REAL eyes).
All in all, there's still more to be discovered. I highly recommend watching the BBC Horizon documentary on the matter (it's titled Synaesthesia). Synesthesia was once considered a subject of pseudoscience like UFO's and telekinesis....however, that's obviously changed. We need the same thing if we're going to take the whole telekinesis scene to the next level.
