I haven't been on in a while. I enlisted in the US Army and I have been away training. While I was in training, my unit, the 489th CA BN, deployed to Afghanistan. Since then they have been mortared several times, and so far no one has been hurt. They have been lucky, but they still have a year to go. And I gotta say, it's a terrible feeling knowing that they're over there dealing with it, and your stuck here at home, hoping that they return safely.

All I ask is that you take a second to appreciate what they're doing. I don't care if you disagree with the war, if you hate the reason we're over there, hell, I disagree too at this point. But the point is, those are people, friends, family, and we lose them everyday.

This is a community that, despite the lack of cohesion I see here from time to time, I believe can come together and bear solid fruit. I love psionics, I love the community, and I love my country.

Thank you if you took the time to read this short post.

Re: A soldier's request

I would like to recognize their efforts to free the country from evil rule of Talibanis. All I don't like about being army or military involved there is missiling of innocents there.

Re: A soldier's request

I am a Vet myself. Served 10 years in the Air Force and had to maintain my unit while they were deployed to Saudi Arabia (before the current wars). I fully understand where you are coming from Martial Psion. You have my sympathy and support. I can tell by the way you stated your post that you have some reservations about why we are over there and I am willing to talk with you over PM if you need someone who understands to discuss it with.

Take care and keep us up to date.

Please retract this statement or supply proof that they are evil. I don't want propaganda but real proof. While the Taliban was in control the growth of poppy plants (for heroin) came to a complete stop and the farmers were growing food to feed their tribes. Since we went in the growth of poppy plants is higher than ever and the US military is guarding the fields. Now if that wasn't F'd up enough, we are an occupational force in a country that is 70 years behind us in technology and would have zero impact on our national security in any way, shape or form. On top of that you have to ask yourself, if (name any other country) invaded and set up a base next to your town and told you how to live and what to grow on your land, would you be happy to have them there?

Am I saying that the Taliban were good? Heck no, but we are at best "no better" than them.

Re: A soldier's request

I pause today, and take a moment to remember those who have passed. For we live in a world where we must send our children to die for the egos of lesser men. Peace be unto them, those who fought and died because they had to; for their land, with it's misguided leadership. May those who survive, return safe and to greener pastures. I hope never to see another day where those unwilling to fight are put to a cause without meaning or purpose other than to suppress and control.

It appears my statement has been misunderstood here. I was referring to accidents/mistakes wherein innocent locals die. Regarding poppy cultivation I thought it was Taliban that is growing it on vast tracts of Afghanistan to feed it's illegal activities and money hunger. It has lead to locals becoming more addict to drugs as well. Poppy cultivation produce go to America and Europe via Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal etc. routes. In my knowledge NATO is helping Afghanistan get rid of this evil which is very tough job for the power local drug lords hold there. They should be cultivating nuts etc. like they were doing in the past before arrival of Taliban there. I don't support posting of forces there with no time limit. I think they should start leaving the country to go back to their homeland for it is tormenting their personal life a lot.

Anyway I wish NATO forces go back to their homeland very soon to have a happy family life.
